The Health & Environment Department provides scientific support to national and international research partners from industry and public institutions.
One of our main research areas is “sensing life” including the development of bio- and nanosensor systems, such as biochips for medical diagnostics.
In our biochip activities we cover all steps of biochip technologies, like development of surface chemistries, design of oligonucleotide probes, arraying, protein assay development, strategies for signal enhancement, assay validation and data analysis. Recently oligonucleotide chips for pathogen detection and protein biomarker chips for diagnosis of sepsis and prognosis of melanoma have been successfully realized.

CBmed, a K1 competence center, links excellent research infrastructure, scientific expertise, medical knowledge, national and international industry partners for systematic medical biomarker research.
CBmed brings together scientific experts with leading pharmaceutical, diagnostic, medical-technology and IT industry partners. CBmed research projects will identify new biomarkers, validate potential biomarkers and conduct translational biomarker research for products to be used in clinical practice.
CBmed will develop easily applicable, targeted, minimally invasive biomarkers for better diagnosis, better therapy monitoring and a more personalized treatment of patients.

Research Center for Data-Driven Business & Big Data Analytics
Know-Center conducts applied and interdisciplinary research in the field of computer science in the areas of data-driven business, big data and cognitive computing. To that end, Know-Center works closely with the Institute of Knowledge Technologies of Graz University of Technology in the area of cognitive science. Specific research topics include search technologies, machine learning methods and knowledge extraction from large data sets, presentation and visualization of massive amounts of information, efficient use of information in social media channels, as well as contextualization and personalization of information.
The Kompetenzzentrum Holz GmbH is a leading research institute in the area wood and wood-related renewable resources in Europe. Its core competences are materials research and process technology along the complete value chain – from raw material to finished products. They develop methods and basics and perform applied research on the economy-science interface.
The relevant Austrian companies and scientific bodies have bundled their strengths in the Kompetenzzentrum Holz. It is their aim to establish national and international projects with a research volume of at least 12 million Euros per year by 2020. 150 employees are doing research on sustainable solutions for the future, developing the state of the art and establishing new subjects in the industry (agenda setting). The companies participating in the Center’s programs increased their competitiveness by higher percentages than their competitors. The scientific partners involved are leading scientists in their respective disciplines.

The Research Center Pharmaceutical Engineering GmbH (RCPE GmbH) is an interdisciplinary K1-research institute in the area of pharmaceutical process- and product-development in Graz. The RCPE focuses on the development and production of pharmaceuticals using rational, science-based methods derived from a mechanistic understanding of relevant phenomena at all scales.
