The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology is a strong partner for innovation in the fields of health and environment. Our experts develop new findings and implement them in innovative technologies and solutions. The Health & Environment Department provides scientific support to national and international research partners from industry and public institutions.
One of our main research areas is “sensing life” including the development of bio- and nanosensor systems, such as biochips for medical diagnostics.
In our biochip activities we cover all steps of biochip technologies, like development of surface chemistries, design of oligonucleotide probes, arraying, protein assay development, strategies for signal enhancement, assay validation and data analysis. Recently oligonucleotide chips for pathogen detection and protein biomarker chips for diagnosis of sepsis and prognosis of melanoma have been successfully realized.

CBmed, a K1 competence center, links excellent research infrastructure, scientific expertise, medical knowledge, national and international industry partners for systematic medical biomarker research.
CBmed brings together scientific experts with leading pharmaceutical, diagnostic, medical-technology and IT industry partners. CBmed research projects will identify new biomarkers, validate potential biomarkers and conduct translational biomarker research for products to be used in clinical practice.
CBmed will develop easily applicable, targeted, minimally invasive biomarkers for better diagnosis, better therapy monitoring and a more personalized treatment of patients.
FELMI-ZFE –Austrian Centre for Electron Microscopy and Nanoanalysis
The Austrian Centre for Electron Microscopy and Nanoanalysis is one of the leading microscopy facilities in the physical and biological sciences; interdisciplinary research, teaching and industry services are the key to our success. We house some of the world’s best microscopes. Our broad field of activity – ranging from fundamental to applied research – sets us apart. We work in close cooperation with universities and enterprises throughout Europe.
The centre consists of two institutions working together:
Innovative Semiconductor Technology - Addressing Global Challenges
Headquartered in Villach, Infineon Technologies Austria AG is a Group subsidiary of Infineon Technologies AG. There are further branch offices in Klagenfurt, Graz, Linz and Vienna. Outside of Germany, Austria is the only site worldwide at which Infineon consolidates expertise in research and development, production and global responsibility for business performance.
The basis for success is an international team with staff members from approximately 60 different nations. This staff has established Infineon Austria as an important corporate leader in Austria.
Energy efficiency, mobility and security are three of the central requirements of modern society. They are also the central challenges that Infineon Austria addresses with its semiconductor and system solutions. Whether in the car, industrial electronics or chip cards, Infineon technology is behind many applications in everyday life. Innovation is the driver and at the same time binding element across all product groups, from analog and mixed-signal circuits to high-frequency and power semiconductors all the way to Embedded Control solutions.

The Kompetenzzentrum Holz GmbH is a leading research institute in the area wood and wood-related renewable resources in Europe. Its core competences are materials research and process technology along the complete value chain – from raw material to finished products. They develop methods and basics and perform applied research on the economy-science interface.
The relevant Austrian companies and scientific bodies have bundled their strengths in the Kompetenzzentrum Holz. It is their aim to establish national and international projects with a research volume of at least 12 million Euros per year by 2020. 150 employees are doing research on sustainable solutions for the future, developing the state of the art and establishing new subjects in the industry (agenda setting). The companies participating in the Center’s programs increased their competitiveness by higher percentages than their competitors. The scientific partners involved are leading scientists in their respective disciplines.
The centre for materials engineering, process engineering & product development
The MCL research programme focuses on the integrated simulation of materials and components across the entire supply chain and on all length scales.
The Materials Center Leoben provides services related to the industrial application of products and processes.
Our focused expertise in materials engineering, process engineering and service behaviour provides a sound basis for development work in the following fields:
Our products include:
The Materials Center Leoben offers a sound mix of theoretical and practical expertise and state-of-the-art facilities, making it a flexible and experienced partner for demanding research, development and application tasks in the areas of materials engineering, process engineering, quality assurance and component design. Our services include both experimental analysis and computer simulation with a special focus on the combination of these two areas - e.g. data measurements for realistic modelling and simulation.
The Research Center Pharmaceutical Engineering GmbH (RCPE GmbH) is an interdisciplinary K1-research institute in the area of pharmaceutical process- and product-development in Graz. The RCPE focuses on the development and production of pharmaceuticals using rational, science-based methods derived from a mechanistic understanding of relevant phenomena at all scales. Our goals are:
In addition to the K1 research projects it is our intention to make our research capabilities and technological background available for companies on a service basis. Typical examples include measurements using our vast experimental and analytical capabilities, literature studies, feasibility studies, design studies, simulation work and other types of services. Our highly-motivated and experienced research team assures rapid results and costumer satisfaction. Our service-portfolio covers research-, development- and transfer-projects with national and international partners from business and science, which can be adjusted to meet individual needs.
