Nano-Health - Nano-structured Materials for Drug Targeting, Release and Imaging

The aim of the joint research project, Nano-Health, which currently comprises thirteen individual projects, is to develop a platform based on new, multifunctional nanoparticles.

These multifunctional nanoparticles will be employed in:

  • the non-invasive targeted delivery of active substances for the treatment of chronic diseases via different application routes, e.g. nasal, oral and pulmonary.
  • nanodiagnostics as contrast media in clinical imaging via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), via fluorescence and via nuclear imaging by PET/SPECT.
  • nanodiagnostics for clinical applications for the early detection of atherosclerotic vascular lesions and the tracking of therapeutic stem cells in cancer treatment
  • toxicological studies of nanostructured materials

The ageing population, high expectations for better quality of life and the changing lifestyle of European society call for improved, more efficient and affordable health care.

Cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular problems and inflammatory and infectious diseases are severe illnesses confronting our society. The application of nanotechnology to these medical problems has the potential to provide impressive solutions. Early diagnosis, imaging and ‘smart’ treatments using nanoparticles provide a basis for personalized health care.

BioNanoNet developed the joint research project Nano-Health and coordinates it.
